Reasons Why (Top Darama Serials)

13 Reasons Why (stylized onscreen as TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY) is an American narrative drama based on the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Originally earmarked as a feature movie, it was instead adapted by Brian Yorkey for the global streaming network Netflix as a webcast television series. The central character is a seventeen year old high school student, Clay Jensen, and his deceased female friend Hannah Baker, who has committed suicide after failing to cope with the culture, gossip and lack of support from her friends and her school. A box of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah in the lead up to her suicide details thirteen reasons why she ended her life.

The original series and its subsequent second series provides a critical overview of American High School culture with an emphasis on the marginalised, less athletic youth who appear to endure sanctioned repression as part of their educational experience. As a global, streaming network release, the program highlights the unique aspects of the American High School system to the broader English speaking audience worldwide via the contemporary streaming systems more popular among modern youth. The series is respectfully annotated and rated appropriately by the Netflix streaming broadcaster which modified its usual viewer interface to ensure certain sections of the credits of the program were not easily bypassed. Generally, Netflix allows viewers to bypass opening and end credits but apparently adjusted their interface due to the intensity of the content.
The series is produced by July Moon Productions, Kicked to the Curb Productions, Anonymous Content and Paramount Television, with Yorkey and Diana Son serving as showrunners. Originally conceived as a film set to be released by Universal Pictures with Selena Gomez in the role of Hannah Baker, the adaptation was picked up as a television series by Netflix in late 2015. Gomez serves as an executive producer. The first season, and the special 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons, were released worldwide on Netflix on March 31, 2017.
The first season received positive reviews from critics and audiences, who have praised its subject matter and acting, particularly the two leads, Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford, who received a Golden Globe Awardnomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series. It has attracted controversy from some, including mental health professionals, over the series' graphic depiction of issues such as suicide and rape, along with other mature content. In May 2017, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season, which was released on May 18, 2018, along with a second Beyond the Reasons special. The second season received negative reviews from critics. On June 6, 2018, the series was renewed for a third season, which is set to be released in 2019. Critical review and audience reaction to the global streaming Netflix series is apparently conflicted, with the program generating obvious controversy between audiences and industry reviewers.
